Why we built this site

Berlin has around 175 museums, and no other European capital hands a visitor so much unsorted history at once. Five state museums share one island in the Spree. The Cold War is documented from both sides within a few U-Bahn stops. A bust of an Egyptian queen and a Trabant simulator sit fifteen minutes apart. Most guides respond to this by giving you one long undifferentiated list.

We wanted something you could actually plan a trip around: the museums grouped the way you would visit them, with the real details in one place — where each one sits, when it opens, what a ticket costs, and what is genuinely worth finding inside.

We also lead with the facts that ruin days when nobody mentions them. The Pergamonmuseum is closed, and only partly reopens in June 2027. Most state museums shut on Mondays, but the Berlinische Galerie and the Humboldt Forum shut on Tuesdays instead. The Jewish Museum closes Mondays too, which surprises people who assume a free museum keeps generous hours. And Museumssonntag, the free first Sunday of the month that half the internet still promises, was discontinued after December 2024.

How we choose what to include

Every museum on this site earned its place for one of three reasons: it holds something you cannot see anywhere else, it explains a piece of Berlin's history better than the alternatives, or it is simply the most enjoyable way to spend an afternoon in this city.

We include museums that sell no ticket at all. The Topography of Terror, the Berlin Wall Memorial and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe are free, and they are among the most important sites in Berlin, so they sit in the guide alongside everything else — with no booking link, because there is nothing to book.

We also say when something is not worth it, or when a cheaper option does the same job. That is the part of a guide that actually helps.

Where our numbers come from

Ticket prices, ratings and review counts on this site are pulled from the booking operator, not copied from a press release. Opening hours, closing days, door prices and closure dates are checked against each museum's own website — the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Jewish Museum, the Sachsenhausen memorial and the rest — and we note the month we last checked at the top of the guide.

Berlin changes its museum schedules more than most cities: renovations run for years, exhibitions move, and the city's culture budget has cut programmes that guidebooks still advertise. Where a date or a price could not be confirmed from an official source, we say so rather than guessing.

How we make money

When you book a ticket or tour through a link on this site, we may earn a small commission from the operator. It costs you nothing extra — the price is identical to booking directly.

That commission does not decide what appears here or in what order. Free museums with no booking link take up a large part of this guide, including several we rank above paid ones, which would be a poor commercial strategy if commission drove the rankings. We would rather you trust the recommendation.

Who writes this

The guide is written and maintained by Lena Brandt, a Berlin-based culture writer who has spent years working through the city's museums — from the 10:00 opening on Museum Island to the Thursday late nights at the Kulturforum that almost nobody uses.

We are not affiliated with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten, or any museum, operator or tourist board. This is an independent site, which is why we can tell you when a ticket is not worth buying.

Museums change their hours, their prices and their renovation timetables, and Berlin does it more than most.
